INSIDE THE BOOK

About this book

OpenCL Compute is a hands‑on introduction to heterogeneous programming, teaching developers how to harness the combined power of GPUs, CPUs, and accelerators using the OpenCL framework. The book breaks down the OpenCL execution model, memory hierarchy, kernel development, and performance optimization techniques. Through minimal working examples and clear explanations, readers learn how to write portable, high‑performance compute code that scales across devices and vendors. Ideal for programmers, researchers, and students looking to unlock parallel computing without being tied to a single hardware ecosystem.

A worthwhile read

A worthwhile addition to my shelf, with realistic expectations.

I picked this up after getting stuck on a project and it turned out to be exactly the right book at the right time. The code samples assume a particular environment, which took a bit of fiddling to get running properly. The code samples assume a particular environment, which took a bit of fiddling to get running properly. The author avoids over-explaining, which keeps the pace up but means you need to pay attention. Recommended, with the caveat that it is not a gentle introduction.

A book of two halves

Not quite what I expected from the description, but there is material here.

I picked this up after getting stuck on a project and it turned out to be exactly the right book at the right time. The exercises at the end of each chapter are worth doing — they caught a few misconceptions I did not know I had. There is a section near the end that ties several earlier ideas together in a way I had not seen before. Three stars feels about right. It will stay on my shelf, but it will not be the first one I reach for.
